eBook School Nurse Evidence-Based Guidelines: Asthma

NASN listened to you!  You told us that asthma is one of the most common reasons for health office visits.  You told us that you wanted more information about the care of students with asthma.  And, you told us that you wanted evidence-based clinical guidelines to support your nursing practice.

Your requests have resulted in the development and release of the eBook School Nurse Evidence-Based Guidelines: Asthma.  The guidelines are based on the most current evidence of care and outcomes.  They provide the evidence for care of children with asthma in school.  Many school nurse experts, medical experts, and other interdisciplinary experts participated in the development and review of these guidelines.  They are available to NASN members for $10; regular price $20.

The guidelines are organized using the School Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice (ANA & NASN, 2011) and the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.  “Standards are the professional expectations that guide the practice of nursing” (Proctor, 2013, p. 48).  Standards also provide information for case finding and ways to promote and encourage an asthma friendly school.  The guidelines include resources, forms, and appropriate partner links to support the implementation of the practice guidelines.  Further, the document has the most current literature related to the care of students with asthma at school.

NASN has also recently released a School Nurse Asthma Care Checklist.  It provides a summary of best practices for the care of students with asthma in school; available at no cost.

School nurses must follow their state regulations/rules and laws, including the nurse practice act of their state, as well as make ethical judgment calls based upon their particular circumstances.  The new guidelines can be used to make recommendations for change of practice, protocols, and policies.

These two new resources from NASN are designed to fully support school nursing practice and are the latest additions to NASN's asthma resources.
