I am moving into my 14th year as a school nurse in the Mat-Su Borough School District in Alaska. I am grateful to offer many years of experience as a RN to our community. Initially as a nursing student, my intent was to become a Psychiatric Nurse and had no interest in traditional "hospital" nursing, but when I found out there was such a thing as school nursing, I set my goals, and did my preceptorship at Mirror Lake Middle School in the Anchorage School District. I graduated nursing school from UAA in 2005, spent two years as a psychiatric nurse taking care of children and adolescent patients with emotional and behavioral needs, and was hired as WMS nurse in 2007. My children were young then, in elementary, middle, and high school. All three are adults now, and yet I find myself loving it here still, nurturing all that come through our doors.
I created an after school social/emotional mindfulness program called Brain Train, where I teach students about their emotions and mindfulness strategies. It dovetails well off of my experience of teaching mindfulness based classes in the community for over 20 years.
All our schools in the district are Trauma Sensitive and spent four years leading our team at Wasilla Middle School, helping to shift mindset to understand how trauma effects our students, their families, and our community. This year our goal is to train the teachers to be aware of how trauma can effect student learning and behavior, to be sensitive to what we do know about our students, and help in our best way possible for students to find success socially and academically. This includes recognizing that we all have triggers to trauma and to bring sensitivity to each of our interactions with our students.
I'm an adventurer and you'll find me hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and snowboarding in our beautiful mountains. My two dogs and wife are always at my side in these many adventures. I enjoy photography, drawing, water and oil painting, and colored pencil drawings. I am the Owner and Director of my own company, Path of the Heart, Inc. where I encourage others in kindness and to follow their passions, as I share my passions in the arts, Whole Health Nursing Education, and Mindful Living through Coorporate, Group, and Private consultations.
