Understanding and Managing Cell Phone and Internet Dependence
When you come to the NASN2014 Conference make sure to take time
to catch up with friends, make some new ones and learn something new in the
process. Speaking this year on Understanding and Managing Cell Phone and
Internet Dependence, I am excited to see the rekindling of old friends and
the joy of true friendship. So many times I see individuals settling for online
relationships in lieu of real human interactions. This is troublesome because
true friendships and relationships take time to develop.
Honest, meaningful relationships
occur when people invest in their relationships.
I’ve identified four “Ts” that are present in developing valued
long-term relationships:
-
Time is needed to exchange ideas, to see if they are
consistent in what they say and do. Time tells the truth. It’s worth the
effort when you find a friend that is honest and consistent over time.
-
Trust is tested over time as to whether the other
person is trustworthy. You share information and wait to see what the other
person does with it. You see if their actions are consistent with their
words and if you can rely on them. Trusting someone comes only when they
prove to be trustworthy. Trust is built by identifying boundaries for
healthy interaction and demonstrating respect for each other’s boundaries.
-
Tenacity is demonstrated by working through problems
and misunderstandings, and developing the relationship over time through the
recognition of benchmarks of experience. Coming together with friends that
have “battled in the trenches” with you is truly a gift. Unwrap the
experience and enjoy it!
-
Triumph is taking the time to celebrate the
investment in building the relationship, as well as developing trust and the
recognition and value in working through the problems. Take the time when
you are in San Antonio to celebrate your successes, your friends, and the
wonderful opportunities that will unfold each day!
