By Piper Largent posted 06-18-2014 09:39

Many questions have arisen regarding how school nurses fit in with the Affordable Care Act and how school nurses can ensure inclusion.

At the same time, legislation regarding epinephrine and other issues arise each year in state.

Everyone is welcome to come to the roundtable discussions scheduled in San Antonio at the NASN 46th Annual Conference.  Come to hear success stories and network with school nurse colleagues in other states to learn what is going on and ask questions.

Affordable Care Act and Local/State Legislative Advocacy Roundtable Discussions
Saturday, June 28th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

Hope to see you there!

School nurses are in a unique position to support efforts to make sure 100% of students in their school have health insurance. With ACA, families have more options, and school nurses could request health insurance status be added to the school registration form. Parents of uninsured students would then receive information abut how to obtain health insurance for their child/family. In Indiana, school nurses are able to refer these families to local agencies that assist the family with the application and follow through to make sure the insurance is approved and that families renew annually. Students who qualify for free or reduced price meals usually qualify for Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Covering Kids & Families of Indiana and other agencies provide this service.
