TSNO demands the safety of students be the utmost priority, and for policy makers to address this senseless violence.

AUSTIN, TEXAS— The Texas School Nurses Organization (TSNO), the professional association representing over 6,000 practicing school nurses in the State of Texas, is devastated by the lost lives of 19 children and two teachers in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24th. We stand with the families that have lost loved ones, the ones still fighting for their lives, and the community that will be impacted by these losses.

“As school nurses, student safety is of utmost importance and a priority while children are in our care. This is a horrific, unimaginable, and preventable event. On behalf of myself and TSNO, our love and thoughts are with the community of Uvalde. But we understand thoughts are not enough and a change is needed to ensure the safety of our students,” stated Board President Karen Schwind.

Our public schools should be the safest place for all students and educators. We stand ready to work together to ensure that students receive the emotional and physical support they will need to begin healing.

We demand that state and federal policymakers take action to ensure student safety. Students should be able to attend school without the fear of not leaving at the end of the day or being traumatized. This tragedy once again marks a real danger to our students and educators. Our policymakers must make a change to prevent gun violence.

We remain committed to ending violence in our schools. Schools must be a safe place for children to thrive and grow.
