Salary Range: $60,000-70,000
The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) is a nonprofit specialty nursing organization, organized in 1968 and incorporated in 1977, representing school nurses exclusively. NASN has nearly 20,000 members and 50 affiliates, including the District of Columbia and overseas.
Position Summary:
The National Association of School Nurses is offering a two-year Fellowship. The Fellowship will begin June 2025 and will end May 2027. The primary responsibility of the Fellow is to conduct the National School Nurse Workforce Study in collaboration with NASN’s Research Team. The purpose of the workforce study is to describe the demographic characteristics and distribution patterns of school nurses, school nursing models and activities, and practice environments among self-reported public and private-school nurses in the United States. NASN conducted the first National School Nurse Workforce Study in 2016 with a follow-up, National School Nurse Workforce Study 2.0 in 2021. The infographics for the 2021 results are available on the NASN website. NASN plans to conduct the 2025-26 National School Nurse Workforce Study to 1) continue measuring workforce datapoints explored in the previous workforce studies, 2) enhance our current understanding of school nurse sensitive indicators, and 3) explore regional variations in school nursing workforce, practice, and student access to care.
The specific responsibilities of the Fellowship include:
- Collaboratively design workforce study
- Conduct primary data collection
- Contribute to data analysis, in collaboration with NASN Research Team and statistician
- Collaboratively create a Dissemination Plan
- Substantially contribute as lead author on at least one manuscript disseminating survey findings
- Collaboratively develop infographics based on survey findings
- Participate as a Member of the NASN Research Team, weekly meetings
- Create an Individualized Development Plan (IDP) with goals for individual growth, research, and contributions supporting NASN’s strategic plan
- Submit quarterly written reports related to the IDP and workforce study progress
- Collaborate with other NASN work projects, as time and expertise allow
- Travel to NASN annual conference and as needed for NASN-related work (expenses covered by NASN)
Qualifications/Skills:
- Recent (within the last two years) PhD or other doctoral program graduate in nursing, public health or related disciplines or doctoral student graduating no later than May 2025
- Experienced in survey design and development and statistical analysis
- An interest in workforce research (interest in nursing practice research including nursing models of practice a plus)
- Experienced with Qualtrics for survey development and dissemination
Benefits:
- Base salary/benefits – NASN currently offers a four-day work week. Fellows may spend on average up to 20% of their time (e.g., 8 hours per 5-day week) in part-time research, teaching, or clinical employment, so long as those activities do not interfere with, or lengthen their fellowship. In addition to this fellowship, fellows may engage in their own program of research, research dissemination, or part-time employment incidental to their training. (Any potential conflict of interest or competing interests should be disclosed to NASN.)

Fellow will have two mentors: NASN’s Director of Research, Practice, and Education (DNP) for evidence-based practice and QI expertise and NASN’s CEO (EdD) for organizational leadership expertise

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Environment: Remote work setting with occasional interruptions.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: Sight must be in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Auditory ability must be in the normal audio range with or without correction.
