2016-2017 NASN Back-to-School ToolKit

A new school year has arrived and that means an updated NASN Back-to-School Toolkit at your fingertips!

The toolkit is organized into these sections: Student and Family Outreach Initiative; Health Office Tools and Templates; Resources to Articulate Your Role; Educational Courses and Activities; and Professional References and Titles.  In the Health Office Tools and Templates section, you'll find two new resources; School Nurse Yearly Goals worksheet and School Nursing Activities Calendar example

The popular checklists have been updated too.  They provide suggestions and recommendations to assist school nurses and families in preparation for the return to school. There are two checklists ─ one specifically for school nurses, and one specifically for families ─ to ensure everyone has the tools and materials necessary to care for a child’s individual needs. The school nurse checklist is aligned with the new Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice and highlights the school nurse standards of practice.

New in the toolkit this year is information about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which replaces the No Child Left Behind Act and essentially gives more power to the states and localities to agree on the best way educate their children. ESSA directly refers to the school nurses role in Title IV (A) stating: “Chronic Disease Management led by School Nurses” and 25 percent of children have chronic health issues. ESSA specifically recognizes the intersection between health and education ─ sick children cannot achieve their academic potential.

As you maneuver through this new school year, NASN is committed to supporting you by providing new and updated tools and resources to help you in planning your role and success as a school nurse. Remember, you are the gateway to a child’s health, safety, and readiness to learn! Have a GREAT school year!

I love the tool kit and its resources, however I wish it were available much earlier. In Texas our nurses return to work the first week in August, therefore I would like the content to be posted by that time.
Thank you
