Program Overview
Children are using cannabis as a medical treatment in ever greater numbers in the 33 states and territories and Washington DC which have medical cannabis programs. Many of these states allow the use of medical cannabis in schools, presenting school nurses with new challenges. This webinar will provide school nurses with a basic understanding of the history of cannabis as a medical treatment, insight into the research supporting its use, its dosing and forms of administration, and a basic understanding of potential problems and precautions around its use.
Learning Outcomes

- Gain a basic understanding of the endocannabinoid system and the pharmacology of cannabinoids.

- Learn which medical conditions may benefit from medical cannabis.
- Understand what is known about the safety and potential risks of cannabis use and abuse.
Intended Audience
This continuing education program is a knowledge-based activity developed to meet the educational needs of registered nurses who are interested in child and adolescent health.
Faculty
Dr. Alan Shackelford is a graduate of the University of Heidelberg School of Medicine in Germany and completed postgraduate medical training at major teaching hospitals of the Harvard Medical School, including a residency in internal medicine and Fellowships in nutritional and behavioral medicine as well as a Harvard Medical School research Fellowship.
Since 2009, Dr. Shackelford has consulted with patients for whom the medical use of cannabis has been of great benefit in the treatment of serious medical problems, many of which were unresponsive to conventional prescription medications.
He has also advised legislators in a number of states and several other countries on the medical uses of cannabis and testified before state senate and house committees in Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania during their deliberations on medical cannabis legislation.
Dr. Shackelford is vitally interested in the scientific investigation of cannabis and its potential medical uses in both humans and in animals and in developing pharmaceutically appropriate products based on those studies.
He is a frequent speaker at scientific and medical events as well as educational seminars and continues to consult with patients on the medical uses of cannabis.
