NH School Nurses: Leading, Advocating, and Educating The New Hampshire School Nurses’ Association is one of the oldest school nurse organizations in the country. Officially formed in 1934, New Hampshire school nurses have been serving in NH schools since the early 1900’s. From the beginning, NH school nurses have successfully worked with teachers and administration to advocate for better health and better learning. NH is a small state with only 1.3 million residents, and yet there are approximately 550 nurses that work in almost every public school in the state. Almost half of these nurses belong to the NH School Nurses Association and help the organization ...

The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility’s Ask, Listen, Learn program brought artist Jim Nuttle to NASN’s 50th Annual Conference to capture what it means to be a school nurse, 50 years after NASN was founded. He asked attendees to tell him their hopes and dreams, the meaning of responsibility for a school nurse, and the small gestures that they’ve made that have had a big impact. Here’s what they told him, and how he drew it. We thought you’d all like to see how it came out. It’s impressive what school nurses can accomplish, and we hope you all achieve your hopes and dreams for the future! See you in Denver for #NASN2019! Hopes and Dreams ...

Twitter is a key communication tool we use at the NASN Annual Conference. When conference participants tweet their conference experience, they enrich the conference experience for others in attendance, share key messages with colleagues who are unable to attend, and give school nursing great exposure on one of the largest social media outlets in the world. If you need a little help getting started, review the three easy steps in the image below and then follow the tweeting tips across the bottom of the image. Your conference tweets should always include this hashtag #NASN2018 -- all tweets with the hashtag will display on the Twitter screen in the ...

As awareness of child sexual abuse in our communities grows, school nurses are poised to play a vital role in preventing and responding to suspicions of abuse. The Adverse Childhood Experiences study illustrates that abuse can be devastating, both during childhood and later in adult life. By preventing child sexual abuse, you can positively impact the lives of children and contribute to their brighter futures as adults. Statistics show that school personnel identify more child abuse than any other profession, including law enforcement. As a school nurse, the lasting relationships you develop with students can make you a trusted adult in their eyes. You are ...

While I do love all things that are bird related (must be from my name), there is something special about Twitter that captivates me. It could be that Twitter is unfolding in real time. There is simultaneous space for both anonymity and intimacy through the magic of tweets. I also feel like I am always learning on Twitter. My Twitter focus is primarily school nurse related. I use Facebook for fun and family news and Twitter is my go-to social media space for professional use. Most recently I have used Twitter to share my passion for #NursingActivism, especially around the issue of violence as a public health crisis. Twitter is a tool for social activism ...

Partnerships have been the heart of the School Nurse Organization of Washington (SNOW) since its inception in the 1950’s and has strengthened the organization’s effectiveness and reach. SNOW began as a part of the public health section of the Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) in 1952. SNOW evolved quickly, as a branch of WSNA in 1955 and in 1957, as an independent organization. SNOW became a department within the Washington Education Association (WEA), the state teacher’s union in 1960. In 1979, SNOW emerged fully independent, incorporating as a non-profit organization but continuing to collaborate with WEA. Finally, in October 2011, The SNOW membership ...

Okay, so close your eyes and imagine this --- hundreds of school nurses holding creatively designed "I Am A School Nurse!" posters all standing together for a photo op! That would be an awesome photo and great for social media! Here's the poster that New Jersey School Nurses created during their spring conference. It made quite the rounds on Twitter! You will have the opportunity to make such a poster during NASN2018! It doesn't have to be this large, but definitely big enough to make an impression. Again, just imagine all of you holding hundreds of posters that say, "I Am A School Nurse!" for a photo that will then be posted on social media! Twitter ...

Asthma affects 8.3% of children in the U.S ( https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/asthma.htm ) and is the leading cause of school absenteeism due to chronic illness (Moonie, Sterling, Figgs, & Castro, 2006). Low-income and minority children who are disproportionately affected by asthma (doi:10.1542/peds.2015-2354) have even higher rates of school absenteeism ( https://ed.gov/datastory/chronicabsenteeism.html ) . Both school absenteeism and the effects of sleep deprivation due to uncontrolled asthma affect academic performance and result in lower school performance in students with asthma compared to students without asthma (Diette et al., 2000; Tsakiris ...
