Seizure Savvy

Building Healthy Communities is all about networking with experienced providers. As members of this strategic committee we challenged ourselves to create a blog post that details how we personally have identified and created partnerships within our own state. In particular, partnerships that improve student health and learning. Sharing my entry below with hyperlinks:

We are blessed in Central Iowa to have an active Epilepsy Foundation Executive Director, Roxanne Cogil. She is passionate about making sure every school nurse has access to training and materials. We have co-presented at conferences, I sponsor continuing education credit for nurse training, and we partner to better support families in Section 504 and IEP meetings.

Roxanne delivers training for associates, school nurses, and teachers to help them better understand how to monitor and intervene to provide seizure first aid, if needed.  All training through the Epilepsy Foundation is free! With the new seizure classification system in place, school nurses may need a refresher! Below is a list of resources:

This is the main address for the Epilepsy Foundation. Explore the “Learn” and “Living with Epilepsy” tabs for pdf educational materials you can use with staff and parents. You will a be able to locate your state affiliate through the “Living …” tab.

Managing Students with Seizures: School Nurse Training Program. Available from either a live Epilepsy Foundation Trainer or click the link on this page to complete this course online at CDC.

Finally check out the Seizure information forms. These are designed for school and family use.

Remember the new resource from NASN? Check out the School Nursing Evidence-based Practice Clinical Guideline: Students with Seizures and Epilepsy.
