School Nurse Interventions to Promote Healthy Weight: You Can Make a Difference

This blog post provides information about the breakout session on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at NASN2016.

School Nurse Rebecca Cartmill, RN, MSN, NCSN, has 15 years of school nursing experience in the Parkway School District in St. Louis County, Missouri. Mrs. Cartmill has a BSN from the University of Missouri/St. Louis and a Masters in School Health/Public Health from the University of Missouri/Columbia. She is also a National Certified School Nurse. She has been recognized for her work as a school nurse as a finalist in the St. Louis Magazine Excellence in Nursing award in 2012 and as a Pillar of Parkway in 2013. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and an active member of St. Louis Suburban School Nurse Association, Missouri School Nurse Association, and National Association of School Nurses. She is passionate about supporting those students who are overweight or obese.

Because of her concern for the health and social impact of children who are overweight or obese, Rebecca Cartmill developed the school nurse resource guide, School Nurse Interventions to Promote Healthy Weight, which was published by the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services in 2014. The purpose of this tool is to equip the school nurse with evidence based concepts to inspire them to tackle the very complex issue of childhood obesity.

On Thursday, June 30, during NASN2016, Rebecca will present, School Nurse Interventions to Promote Healthy Weight: You Can Make a Difference. Her presentation will contain two parts – she will introduce the tool kit School Nurse Interventions to Promote Healthy Weight and will give examples of motivational interviewing, demonstrating how to initiate those difficult discussions in talking with students and families about making healthy changes in their eating and physical activity.
