Allergies & Anaphylaxis

Introduction

Prevalence of food allergy in children is well established. Data from the National Health Interview Survey in 2021 revealed 5.8% of children between the ages of 1-17 years had a food allergy. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023) One third of children/youth with food allergies also has asthma. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008) Allergic conditions affect about 50 million children and adults living in the United States. (American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology, 2020) Non-Hispanic Black children were more likely than non-Hispanic White and Hispanic children to have a food allergy. (Zablotsky et al., 2023)
