by Aliza Sherman, a parent from the panel discussion: Vaping the Next Chapter - Utilizing Effective Tools and Resources to Combat E-cigarettes in Your School! My daughter started Juuling the summer before 8th grade when she was only 12. She and her girlfriends talked about getting “high” from every puff of nicotine. They texted about their favorite flavors - mango, mint - and how they felt “buzzed” from the massive doses of a powerful stimulant. For my daughter, that “buzz” quickly turned into intense anxiety and agitation, both when she vaped and when she ran out. She sought additional substances to settle her nerves and to help her sleep. She learned ...

During a time of incredible grief and loss, a message of hope and healing for students and school personnel is essential. Below are responses to some of the questions we were not able to address, but these brief answers feel inadequate. I welcome you to reach out to our team if you want to talk further or to bring grief awareness training to your school community. ...

I wish I could have seen you all in person, but I feel like I was able to connect with you through the chats you sent me and the discussion at the end of my presentation. During our session for NASN2020 Screenagers: It's a Blaancing Act panel, we weren't able to get to all the questions during the live Q&A. So here are a few more responses to the questions that was asked by the live audience. Question: Can you address how we can help support the mental health struggles of school-aged students that challenged by digital technology over usage? Answer: Have open and honest dialogue with your students. Not just once, but as often as needed and at every opportunity. School nurses asked for guidance on how to address chronic absenteeism this coming school year. Questions have included: should we track it? How do we track attendance for virtual school? and How do we promote attendance, while also telling students with COVID or other infectious symptoms to stay home? The key is to remember why we track attendance, and particularly chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is an evidence-based indicator of students at risk, not just of academic failure, but other social, emotional, or physical health concerns and health inequities (Jordan, 2020). COVID has exacerbated these disparities while also limiting usual surveillance ...

Field Trip Toolkit Post Session Follow up Thank you for attending or listening to my session on meeting the health needs of students on field trips. During the session, there were multiple “chats” related to not being informed of field trips in a timely manner. Seems school nurses everywhere would like policies requiring 10 -30- 60-day notices (local-out of state-international) as suggested in the toolkit! Meeting the health needs of students during the school day while on campus is challenging. Doing so off campus on field trips even more so. I addressed some of the issues and challenges during our time together. The following are some answers to lingering ...

Please join me in the closing session, Taking Your Seat at the Table: Be Brave, Be Dynamic, Make it Count! , to learn how to help make your voice count as you continue to advocate for our students. I will be sharing my personal journey as a life-long learner and leader and how I had to reimagine what is possible in order to better lead my team, my students and my community. Many of our communities have been fighting against inequities that existed long before COVID-19. Now that COVID-19 has exacerbated those inequities, it is extremely critical to take drastic steps to advocate for our youth and their communities. The shelter in place and COVID-19 are certainly ...

NASN knows this is an uncertain time and does not want to appear insensitive to the current pandemic. We have taken our NASN home page banner down temporarily. However, we are also mindful of the role that conference, perhaps this year more than ever, plays in connecting, informing, educating, inspiring, celebrating and energizing school nurses around the world. We know that NASN2020 will happen. Currently, we are still planning on holding our conference in Las Vegas at the end of June. However, NASN is watching the situation very closely, and, if necessary, will change to a virtual program platform if a better fit for our attendees. Either way, we hope ...
