As a black child psychiatrist, I’m often asked about the mental health of black students and/or students of color. My first response? The lived experiences and racial identities of students of color - even those who identify as the same race - are remarkably diverse. This reality underscores the need for cultural humility. Additionally, despite our desire to serve, healthcare providers, and the systems in which we operate, are not immune to racism and bias. Here are three key (though by no means sufficient) steps in providing care in inter-racial treatment settings. 1. Be Humble – Healthcare providers should strive for cultural humility rather than competence ...

Be the priority for your own emotional well-being. Remember a dysregulated adult cannot help a dysregulated child!✅ I took my own advice and followed my “Be” plan by making my emotional well-being a priority this summer. I hope many of you were able to view " Brothers," a film directed by Mike Norton, my son and Reginald Groff, a professional filmmaker. It was my honor to share my story with you at NASN2021 and to share the film with you for a limited time. The film is appropriate for medical professionals, families, educators, and anyone who has been touched by mental illness. It addresses disabilities; both physical and mental, and demonstrates people first, disability second. Perhaps the most powerful part of the film is the illustration of John changing throughout the film as the schizophrenia progressed. Please follow the Facebook Page for " Brothers " for more information ...

How are you feeling? Really, how have you been feeling? It’s not a simple question. Nor is there a simple response. Perhaps, like most people, you have you been riding a roller coaster ride of emotions over the last year? Have you given yourself “permission to feel” all your emotions? As nurses in our schools, we must take care of our own emotional lives so that we can both show up as our best selves for our colleagues and students. Why? Emotions matter! They influence everything: our attention and memory, our ability to learn, our capacity to make sound decisions, the quality of our relationships, our physical and mental health, and our everyday performance. ...
